PREDATOR AWARENESS TRAINING
- We will do a predator perch assessment – We will review all schools within the school district, create maps of all school locations which will identify discreet/covert and overt predator vantage points from outside the school, not inside.
- We will examine the immediate routes that children take home, while walking or on bikes and identify trouble areas. Cutting through parks, alleys etc.
- We will provide a brief overview on how surveillance operates, terminology, what a bad guy will use to divert unwanted interaction from authority figures, etc.
- Progressive static surveillance
- Progressive surveillance
- Lookout perch surveillance
- Intelligence gathering/ patience, one grain of sand at a time philosophy
- Soft target vs. hard target
- Some surveillance terminology
- Surveillance cover stories, what they may use
- The importance of area knowledge to the bad guy
- Individual vs. team concept surveillances
- A method of reporting and communicating results
- Storage for information collection
- Create an information coordinator position reporting officer (don’t want everyone call ISD PD)
- Every employee can be surveillance specialists, eyes for the school
- We will detail how all employees can help protect the children and school by paying close attention to minute details.
- In order to help, ISD employees need to know what and where to look
- We will give as many examples as possible of questionable behaviors to look for
- 99% of predators and attackers do not want to be observed while observing and assessing you
- We will also examine employee habits and patterns which may educate the intruders to school security weaknesses.
- How can you help
- We don’t need vigilantes.
- Develop skills in awareness.
- The first step is to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Why it is extremely important what you observe when you come to work.
- Why it is just as important what you observe when you leave the school grounds.
- Why it is just as important when you are outside at recess, gym or PE class. Not just the immediate area but some distance away. This may seem like added work but it only takes seconds once you put it into practice.
- Know what’s normal in your neighborhood/school area then you’ll easily recognize what’s abnormal.
- We will educate the ISD employees on the type of information they should collect and in what order
- License Plate
- Personal Description
- Vehicle Description
- Location of incident
- Times
- Frequency and reasons for suspicion
- And more
Remember, we do not want to harass neighbors and parents but if someone is suspicious there’s nothing wrong with collecting information.
- Terrorist groups and criminals will always try to figure a way to beat a security net. This will not change or go away. All we can do is create ways to fend it off and protect ourselves the best way we can. And that means being pro-active in your protection and continually evolve your security methodology.
– We realize local Police Departments and School Police Departments will have their protocols and that is not our mission, to judge that or to change that. Our mission is to develop awareness which in turn may help the ISD prevent a tragedy.
